The British School at Athens (BSA) is seeking an energetic, personable and technically versatile IT Systems Administrator.  The ideal candidate is someone who values Greek cultural heritage and wants to play a key role in helping the BSA continue to investigate and celebrate it.

The IT System Administrator is the front-line support to the BSA’s academic and administrative staff.  These staff look to the IT System Administrator to ensure they have the tools to do their work.  In this role you will work with innovative researchers – archaeologists, historians, cultural heritage scientists, as they develop new web applications that support research, education and public outreach. The job includes some evening and weekend commitments in support of the BSA’s active schedule of seminars and lectures.

The annual gross salary will be up to €30,000, plus private health insurance.

Duties:

  • Help desk for desktop computing, including ticket management and escalation to offsite engineers.
  • Administration of Active Directory and Google Workspace user accounts
  • Support of staff computers (laptops, desktops in Windows OS)
  • Manage print services and offsite printer hardware maintenance
  • Support of computers attached to research instruments (Windows OS)
  • Support of library catalog terminals (Ubuntu desktops)
  • Support of School IT facilities for seminars and conferences
  • Design and maintenance of the BSA websites (WordPress, PHP)
  • Installation and integration of Digital Humanities tools in support of BSA research and information sharing activities. Website development (LAMP, CSS, SASS, Javascript, Python).
  • Provide GIS services and map making for BSA publications and websites
  • Accounting of software licensing and physical equipment

Required Skills:

  • Friendly, outgoing personality with great interpersonal skills.
  • Good working knowledge of Windows 10/11 desktop management.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, Hyper-V, WSUS, and Ubuntu.  
  • Experience and interest in development of web applications: PHP, JavaScript; CSS, SASS, HTML; configuration of web servers (LAMP).
  • Experience and interest in database administration, MySQL, Postgres/PostGIS.
  • Familiarity with Web CMS: WordPress.
  • Familiarity with Python coding to process BSA data for external and internal sharing.
  • Knowledge of and interest in GIS, GIS webmap servers.

The position (f/t) is available 21 October or a soon as possible thereafter. A probationary period will apply. Residence in Athens (Greece) is a requirement and a working knowledge of Modern Greek is desired.
