About Global Brigades

Global Brigades is an international non-profit and volunteer based organization that uniquely implements a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Since 2021, Global Brigades Ελλάς has been operating a Polyclinic in Athens with 4 medical specialties, pediatrics, ophthalmology, gynecology and dental, providing free primary health care to vulnerable communities and individuals with a focus on migrant and refugee populations. GB also operates other programs regarding business counseling to small businesses run by migrants and refugees, hands-on volunteering service to shelters for unaccompanied minors and educational programs addressed to volunteers and or communities. GB operates like a mediator between volunteers coming from the U.S.A., Canada and UK and vulnerable communities in Athens, organizing missions of volunteers called “Brigades”.

 

Purpose Statement: 

We are seeking to create a pool of qualified individuals who could, under short notice, perform the short-term task (1 week per batch) of coordinating a Brigade, starting from March 2025. This individual would direct, control, and coordinate the effective development and execution of the assigned brigade. Brigades are short-week medical clinic interventions carried out by local healthcare professionals in conjunction with foreign volunteers. 

 

Daily Tasks and Expectations (include but not limited to):

  • The coordinator will be staying with the volunteers in a compound facility, being with them 24/7.
  • Must ensure that all volunteers comply with their assigned tasks in a timely manner, throughout their program week.
  • The coordinator should have efficient problem-solving skills, regarding last-minute itinerary changes and maintain continuous communication with other members of staff so that they are prepared in advance. 
  • Must ensure a pleasant and safe stay and experience for the volunteers. 
  • Be in close contact with their project manager and communicate any problems that may arise during the brigade week.
  • Conduct daily reflective discussions with the volunteers and be aware of the quality of their experience. 
  • In charge of the request, administration, and settling of contingency expense funds as governed by the organization’s policy.
  • The coordinator must report all the activities carried out during the development of the brigade program. This report must include evaluations of the personnel in charge and any anomaly that may have arisen during the brigade. 
  • Must align with humanitarian values and the code of conduct of Global Brigades, with the policies of zero tolerance and the code of ethics established by the organization. 
  • The coordinator must present the completed brigade report to the office staff after each brigade.  Payment will be withheld until the delivery of this report. 

Other Responsibilities:

 

Ongoing Volunteer Support and Monitoring

  • Conduct an orientation presentation to train volunteers to be effective and respectful.
  • Advise volunteers on safety risks they might encounter inside and outside the GB Athens Clinic and Lodging compound, as well as ensure they understand and adhere to the Global Brigades Policies 
  • Must know how to navigate the center of Athens.
  • Act as a cultural mediator and provide information about general topics concerning the Greek culture.
  • Be familiar with complex issues, such as refugee/migration topics.

 

Implementation

  • Uphold professionalism, excellence, and support for the volunteers at all times.
  • Follow the advice and instructions of the GB  staff and ensure volunteers are clear on these.
  • Support volunteers with issues, medical emergencies, and any work-related concerns to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for the volunteers and patients.
  • Uphold  Global Brigades core values in all dealings.
  • In case of emergency, be available 24/7 for the volunteers during the brigade.
  • Be accountable for accurate financial reporting and use of funds.
  • To regularly review and improve volunteer programming.

 

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals (volunteers, refugee population, staff, doctors, etc.)
  • Able to deal effectively with ambiguity and change
  • Able to make high-quality decisions in stressful situations with limited resources and time
  •  Cross-cultural awareness
  • Must be open, fun, empathetic, honest,and  eager to help while maintaining professional boundaries. 

 

Logistics:

  • Global Brigades will provide training beforehand and a debriefing after each brigade. 
  • Organization phone will be provided for this week with credit
  • CVs will be kept on file and GB will communicate upcoming brigade schedules to the relevant and immediately available persons at the time. Unavailability to work with brigades more than two times in a row may lead to the applicant being moved lower on our list of priority coordinators.
